About Us

Dr. Patricia Jeng created our company, Mimosa Acoustics, in 1994. We were formed to take advantage of research done on cochlear nonlinearity by the Acoustics Research Group of Bell Laboratories, from 1985-1992. Dr. Jeng and her collaborators (including Etymōtic Research) developed one of one of the earliest available Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) measurement systems, CUBeDIS™.

Through technical advancements, we condensed the original CUBeDIS™ system into a lightweight probe and PC-card assembly. The PC-card fits into a laptop computer and is highly portable. The DPOAE measurement is now a standard audiological tool, and it is especially useful for infant hearing screening because the tests are quick to perform and do not require an active response from the patient.

One of Mimosa Acoustics’ strengths is the flexibility of our hardware and software. Currently we have three measurement modules available for purchase. They are all built for the same hardware system, and they share a common patient database and user interface. In addition to the original DPOAE measurement module, we now provide a Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE) measurement module, and a Middle Ear Power Analyzer (MEPA) measurement module.

The TEOAE measurement module provides an alternative method for measuring otoacoustic emissions that uses wideband stimuli rather than tones. Mimosa Acoustics has enhanced the TEOAE method by providing customizable stimuli and individualized calibration.

Continuing in the innovative tradition, Mimosa Acoustics developed the Middle Ear Power Analyzer (MEPA), which was granted FDA 510(k) approval in February 2006. The MEPA measurement determines Middle Ear status without changing the pressure in the ear. Pairing otoacoustic emission measurements with MEPA measurements provides diagnostic information about both the middle and inner ear.

Our greatest passion at Mimosa Acoustics is advancing diagnostic audiology through research. It is our goal to bring the best possible auditory diagnostics to clinicians through our continuing collaboration with leading researchers and the use of state-of-the art technologies.
